Instructions

1.
Start with the back petal. Outline the petal in split stitch with 3746. Draw in the guidelines for the long and short stitch.

2. Row one: Stitch the first row across the top of the pansy in long and short stitch using 3746. Start from inside the petal and over the split stitch, this will ensure you have a nice neat edge.

3. Row two: Stitch the second row in 340. Bring the needle up through the previous row of stitching and stagger the stitches so that they blend well into the previous stitches.

4. Row three: Stitch the third row as before in 341. This petal is now complete.

5. Now stitch the next two petals on the left and right of the back petal. Outline each petal in split stitch first using 340. Fill the petals with long and short stitch from the outside edge in towards the center as follows: Row one = 340, row two = 341, row three = 3747.

6. Next stitch the front petal. Outline the petal in split stitch using 3078. Fill the petal with long and short stitch starting from the outside edge in towards the center as follows: row one = 3078, row two = 727, row three = 726, row four 742.

7. Next work the flower center. Fill the triangle with satin stitch in 742. Outline the triangle with split stitch in 3819. Work a single French knot in the centre of the triangle in 3819. Add a few streaks with 550. These are done in long and short straight stitches from the base out into the petal.

8. Next stitch the two leaves on either side of the flower. Outline each leaf with split stitch using 581. Fill on either side of the center vein with slanted satin stitch in 3819 and 581. (The stitches should slant from the outside of the leaf in towards the center vein). Add shadows with a few straight stitches at the top of the leaf with 3011.
